(not me)...and so today welcomes the almost-end of the school holidays, and so brings me to the end of my three-days-off-in-two-weeks working fortnight. and, so is my transformation from a customer-service-loving rhia to a pretending-i-can't-see-you, customer-hating rhia complete. i wasn't aware of the value of a day off - if not for physical recuperation but mental - until i began to experience uncontrollable schizophrenic-like thoughts arising with the arrival of every customer. ugly, bitch, fuck off, going to eat all that pig, fucking filthy children, i hate you die, why are you such picky bastards, no we don't have that (when we actually do but i'm exhausted and i want to go home). it's disturbing that these thoughts come into being without my effort. entering a hopefully more relaxed schedule, i hope to quell my anti-customer schizophrenic thoughts as well. in other news... i feel guilty for neglecting to mention it, life-consuming as it is: bulimia.

help a n00b out! hi, everyone! i bought my very first tortoises a few days ago. i have a baby hermann's tortoise named banjo and a baby greek tortoise named fishstick. i tried to do a little research before buying them, but relied heavily on information provided to me by the shop from which i got them. i followed their advice and have a heat/uv lamp at one side of their tank (where their hut is also located), and their food and water dishes at the other, cooler side. i have been feeding them organic dandelion greens and organic carrot shavings sprinkled with vitamins. i gave them a short five-minute soak the day i brought them home, and i change out their water daily with filtered water.
i do, however, have a few questions:
1. i noticed some sort of product at the store which would make their water suitable, but the saleswoman never mentioned it. i know not to give them tap water, but is charcoal-filtered water ok?
2. they love to bury themselves in their "bedding," but it seems like they never come up! i think i've seen them out and checking out their new digs once since i put them in the tank. is this normal? i know they like to burrow, but i just want to make sure that they're not reacting negatively to their new environment.
3. is there anything else i should keep in their tank? it seems so sparse and boring, and i want them to feel at home.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I knew it Your result for What's your drink? From the bar to the bedroom... TEQUILA!One tequila... Two tequila... Three... what's after three, again?
You've probably been known to leave your partner, or should i say victim, brutally damaged, and swearing "never again" but they always come back don't they? this isn't to imply that you are a sexual predatoror or abusive, but that you can handle more kink than most. you're a wildperson and you're out for everyone to have fun. you are usually the first one mixing it up, showing off your dance moves, possibly without pants. car So I took my first car to get smogged and made an appointment to go to the DMV for registration. I don't know why I didn't buy a car earlier! I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to afford it, and made all sorts of excuses for not having my own car. I still prefer public transportation when available and practical, and I would really rather be on the motorcycle if it was running. But owning a car is certainly within my budget. And let me tell you how much I LOVE my mechanic. That man is awesome. He's the happiest most pleasant helpful guy ever.
I'm feeling an incredible amount of anxiety right now. I think the move is finally hitting me. I'm really excited about moving into The Studio, but I'm also panicking about a number of things. I haven't been sleeping well. I need to start taking the sleeping pills again so that maybe I can get some sleep and get over this anxiety. |

Is anyone interested in one or even three kittens? My aunt took in a pregnant cat a few months ago and now is looking for homes for three kittens and maybe the mother (who is about a year old). I live in Plymouth and if anyone is interested I'd be more than willing to drive the kitten anywhere with in a reasonable distance (unless it is on the way to Morris, MN, since I might be visiting there sometime soon). So yeah, just send me a message or something if you are looking for a cute kitty. Here's a pic of the kitties (the gray one at the bottom is Mimsy, which my aunt and cousins are keeping and the orange one has already found a home): |

Black Beaks? These are my six babies. They're over six weeks old. Most will have homes. I am still looking for a home for one or two. The parents are a yellow female and mostly white male with blue underside. The oldest two have black beaks. I've tried to look up information on budgies with black beaks. I have never seen that before. Has anyone here ever seen black beaks on budgies before? |

The History of Debt in America (Now in PDF!) http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/getrichslowly/~3/340100575/ http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/?p=1939 In Wednesday’s links roundup, I mentioned a long article on the history of debt in America. Rian dropped me an e-mail to say that he liked the essay, too, but found a way to make it more accessible:
I have been in contact with the author of the long article about the history of debt in America that you posted recently. I cooked up a PDF version because I like to read long articles offline, and he has agreed to let me post it. He will also be posting it himself when he gets the time to do so. I’ve made it available, with permission, for public consumption.
I, too, prefer to read long articles on paper. Thanks to Rian’s work (and the work of Tom, the original author), I now have the 21-page document sitting on my nightstand. Peeking at the final page, I was struck by the following passage:
Money, again, is important but it is not the determining factor in true wealth. So when you get in debt make a plan to get out and stick to it. Let go of your past mistakes. Forgive yourself and forgive others who may have played a part in your debt.
[...]
Build your true wealth from the inside out. Be true to yourself and help others when you can. Learn to enjoy the experiences that come freely with life, embrace the people and natural beauty that surrounds you. When you do you will find that money takes it proper place. It will ebb and flow but the true wealth that is you is eternal.
I’ll consume the entire document over the next few evenings. Call me geeky, but I love reading about the history of money.

Wax on! Wax off! I finally saw The Karate Kid last night for the first time. I had never seen it, but I kept hearing references to it all year. So I rented it last night to see what all the fuss was about, and really rather liked it. It's a good, simple and straightforward flick. I especially loved the evil sensei at the Cobra Kai dojo (or whatever that place was called). Heh. He was so good at bein' bad.
I think the only other Ralph M. film I ever saw was Crossroads. |

Dharma Quote of the Week - excellent advise We usually discriminate strongly between someone who intends to harm us and someone who doesn't. We think, "That's all right; he didn't mean it"; or the person who has harmed us can say, "Why do you blame me so much? I didn't mean to." But we get really angry when we know people mean to harm us. How could we possibly see such people as intimate, close, dear--as dear as our best of friends? If you can retain a little compassion when people harm you unintentionally, you have made progress. But if you retain it when someone intends to harm you, you are really successful. It's not that you think, "This person is marvelous; she's trying to rob me," but you don't take these facts as reasons for hating the person. You recognize the intention and put your wallet in your front pocket. You take such measures, but the conditions that prompted them no longer serve as reasons for hatred. Our wish to love everyone and the actual attitudes we have under pressure are in constant conflict. That's just the way we are. We've been wandering in cyclic existence since beginningless time, because of desire and hatred, and it's going to take a lot of familiarization to change this. Be relaxed about it. Don't put pressure on yourself, thinking things like, "Oh, I'm a scumbag because I hate so deeply." Rather, try this attitude: "I have to admit it. As much as my ideals say I should love so-and-so--or at least be neutral--I have to face the fact that I don't." Go easy on yourself. --from A Truthful Heart: Buddhist Practices for Connecting with Others by Jeffrey Hopkins, foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, published by Snow Lion Publications |

My mom sent me a package of stuff for my birthday, which got here yesterday. I was annoyed with UPS for not delivering it until after 6:30pm, but happy to get it nonetheless. The contents:
-A birthday card that plays "Brick House" when you open it. -A check for $25 -Four plush smiley face flowers with bendable stems -A bag containing seven keychains with witty sayings -A purple G clef pendant made of dichroic glass -A Murano glass necklace -A jewelry box/music box done in the style of a Fabregé egg -An silver and onyx ring -A silver and cats' eye ring (Which she wrote was from Simon) -A gold ring -A sheer black scarf that's decorated with red sequins -More moonshine from my grandfather -A black steel ring and a few keychains for Sean
My mom told me that she had tried to find a ring for me like the one my grandmother (her mother) had given to me before she died -- the one that got stolen from our previous apartment. She couldn't find one exactly like it, so she picked the closest she could find. Instead of being shaped like an S, it looks like it has an infinity symbol.
And the jewlery box, I was both shocked and amused by the song it plays. You'll never guess in a million years what that song is. |

Gardening Basics: What to Do with All That Extra Zucchini http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/getrichslowly/~3/339818422/ http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/?p=1930 This is a guest post from my wife. I could not have written this — I hate zucchini.

Ah, summer. Or, as it’s sometimes known, zucchini season.
If you were one of those brave souls that planted zucchini this year, it’s about to start exploding. Or perhaps where you live, it’s already mid-explosion! It’s time to start finding ways to use all that produce.
Fresh zucchini is great when grilled with a bit of olive oil and garlic salt, or sliced in pasta salads, or eaten raw with hummus or salsa. For these uses, pick zucchini (also known as courgettes) when they are still small, less than eight inches long.
Eventually your palate will crave variety, or one green monster will get away from you and grow too large for eating on its own. For that, I submit the following recipes. Neither one particularly tastes like zucchini — a plus for vegetable-wary eaters like J.D. — but the shredded squash adds moisture to the finished product. I once tried zucchini brownies, but they were soundly rejected! [J.D.'s note: Zucchini brownies. My brains still boggles that Kris tried to pull that one over on me. What a waste of perfectly good chocolate.]
Zucchini duck! (Not our zucchini…)
The following Pineapple Zucchini Quick Bread recipe makes two loaves, so there’s plenty for payback if someone you know is sharing their zucchini largess with you. Or you can freeze a loaf, covering it in plastic wrap and then a layer or foil. I recently noticed that due to a store sale and a coupon, I could get pineapple chunks for half the unit cost of crushed pineapple. I bought the chunks (six cans — the limit) and, as needed, just give them a whirl in the food processor so I can use them in recipes.
Pineapple Zucchini Quick Bread
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 cups shredded zucchini
- 1 cup crushed canned pineapple, well-drained
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 cup raisins or chopped nut of your choice
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix wet ingredients together in a large bowl. Sift together dry ingredients then add to wet mixture and stir just until combined. Stir in optional nuts and/or raisins.
Pour into two greased loaf pans and bake for one hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Next, these Zucchini Basil Summer Muffins are a nice lunch accompaniment to a bowl of summer gazpacho or a garden salad. When my zucchini and basil are plentiful, I’ll freeze a couple batches of these muffins for fall soup dinners. [J.D.'s note: I'll begrudgingly admit I like these.]
Zucchini Basil Summer Muffins
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup milk
- 2/3 cup vegetable oil
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 Tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups shredded zucchini
- 2 Tablespoons fresh basil, minced (or more to taste)
- 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
Preheat oven to 425 degrees and prepare 10 muffin cups. In a medium bowl, beat eggs lightly and stir in milk and oil. Combine dry ingredients and stir in to egg mixture until flour is just moistened. Gently fold in zucchini and basil.
Fill muffin cups ¾ full and top with cheese. Bake 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Makes ten muffins.
For either recipe, you can substitute up to half the flour with whole wheat flour. For the first recipe (the bread), I also have a note that 1/2 cup of applesauce can be substituted for half the oil, but I haven’t tried this lighter variation.
What do you do with all the extra zucchini in your garden?

An experience I've been lurking here for a while, but finally something interesting has happened, so I can post!! My name is Rachel. I've lived in my current house for over 11 years. It's a biiiig house. I love it, and it has such a great history. ( Read more... )Well, for a while the activity was pretty strong... then it sort of died down. Now it's coming back and I want to tell you about this experience I just had. I just got back at 12:30 from a showing of The Dark Knight and I was getting into my pajamas. I was the only one awake on the second floor of the house. Just as I closed my door, I heard a girl say my name. It sounded like she was trying to grab my attention before the door closed. I looked around in my room but saw nothing. There was nothing outside either: my parents were asleep, and everyone else was either on the top floor or on the bottom floor. It was spooky, I must admit, but the entities are nothing to be scared of. They do enjoy sneaking up on me in the middle of the night, though, and filling the tiny room my computer is in with cold. They also enjoy standing outside my door. I can hear them walk down the hallway and just stand there. Anyway, I'll keep you posted on this, since I'm actually very excited to have them back. I kind of missed them!! |
